OperaBend welcomes you to live opera in Central Oregon, whether you're seeing your first performance or coming back for another season.

Your First Opera

Opera combines voices, music, and theater to tell a story. You don't need to study up before you come.

  • OperaBend welcomes everyone, and you don't need any prior opera knowledge to enjoy a performance. We'll help you get oriented before the performance. Opera tells stories through voices, music, drama, comedy, and sometimes a little bit of chaos.

  • Opera welcomes listeners without any classical music knowledge. You don't need to know the difference between a baritone and a bass or be able to identify a Mozart aria to enjoy opera. Come ready to experience a story told through music, voices, theater, and emotion. You might be surprised by how much you recognize.

  • Opera and musicals both combine storytelling, acting, music, costumes, and scenery. Opera tells its story primarily through singing without amplification, with the orchestra playing an especially central role. And just like musicals, operas can be funny, romantic, dramatic, heartbreaking, or all four in the same evening.

  • OperaBend welcomes lifelong opera lovers and people who've never been to one before. There's a place for everyone here. Come curious, come comfortable, and come ready to experience live music and theater.

Choosing a Performance

OperaBend presents fully staged MainStage productions and concerts that focus on the music and singers. The production you choose shapes what you'll see and hear.

  • OperaBend's MainStage productions present fully staged operas with professional principal singers, an orchestra, chorus, costumes, lighting, and sets. These large productions combine the music and theatrical elements of opera in one performance.

  • A concert performance focuses primarily on the music and singers, with less emphasis on a fully staged theatrical production. These performances often give you a more intimate setting to experience the voices and music of opera.

  • Opera offers young people a chance to experience live music and storytelling. Some productions suit the whole family, while others may contain mature themes. OperaBend provides age recommendations or content information when appropriate, so you can choose the experience that's right for your family.

  • OperaBend's website and social media provide information about upcoming productions, concerts, tickets, artists, and special events. Visit our website and follow us on social media to learn more. We can't wait to welcome you to the OperaBend family.

Planning Your Visit

OperaBend holds performances at several Bend venues. Your visit starts with the location, arrival time, and any accessibility arrangements you need.

  • OperaBend presents many of our concerts at Wille Hall on the Central Oregon Community College campus through our close partnership with COCC. We typically present our MainStage productions in a Bend high school theater. This year for the 2026-2027 season we're also adding an outdoor production at Alpenglow Park in Southeast Bend.

  • OperaBend audiences wear everything from jeans and casual attire to suits and cocktail dresses. There's no dress code, so wear whatever makes you comfortable. Come as you are and enjoy the performance.

  • OperaBend recommends arriving about 30 minutes before the performance begins. You'll have time to park, find the theater, pick up your tickets if necessary, use the restroom, and settle into your seat without feeling rushed. For the comfort of our performers and audience members, staff may hold late seating until an appropriate break in the performance.

  • OperaBend helps visitors plan for accessible seating, parking, entrances, and other accommodations. We want everyone to be able to experience live opera. Accessibility varies by venue, so please contact us before your visit with any questions. We're happy to help make your visit as comfortable as possible.

  • OperaBend volunteers and staff will help you find your seats, answer questions, and make you feel welcome. Ask us when you arrive. We love talking about opera, and there's no such thing as a silly question.

Seeing a Show

OperaBend provides running times when you purchase tickets and projects English translations for operas sung in other languages. Here's what to expect during the performance.

  • OperaBend presents works in a variety of languages, including Italian, German, French, and English. The language depends on the production. When the opera isn't in English, projected supertitles provide English translations so you can follow the story from beginning to end.

  • Supertitles display an English translation above or near the stage while singers perform the original words. Think of them as subtitles at the opera. You can enjoy the original language while still knowing exactly what's happening.

  • Most full operas run approximately 2½ to 3 hours, including one or more intermissions. The running time varies from production to production, and concert performances generally run shorter. OperaBend always provides the approximate running time when you purchase your tickets.

  • Most full OperaBend productions include an intermission, giving you a chance to stretch your legs, visit the restroom, grab a drink, and chat with your fellow opera audience members. You can also use the break to discuss what just happened on stage.

  • Each production sets its own photography and recording policies. We love seeing audiences share their OperaBend experiences, so please follow the announcements and signage at the theater. Never use flash photography or anything that might distract performers or other audience members.
